Habib Ali al-Jifri & His Increasingly Problematic Statements
Habib Ali al-Jifri is well known for his numerous problematic, confusing, and deviant positions and statements. He is linked to Habib Umar by family ties and is part of the board of the institution Dar al-Mustafa in Tarim, Yemen. Habib Ali al-Jifri stated multiple times in public that he loves the Jews. He plays a major role in promoting interfaith dialogue, alongside other deviants like Hamza Yusuf and Abdullah bin Bayyah.
Various scholars, journalists, and writers have refuted and rebuffed him, but he continues in his extreme deviation.
In a recent post on X [29 September 2026, 5:19 PM], Habib Ali al-Jifri has stated that 'there are approximately 6.5 billion non-Muslims on Earth right now; my understanding of Islamic law is that most of them will not go to Hell!'
Habib Ali al-Jifri, in essence, is pushing the deviated and blasphemous idea that non-Muslims will be saved in the afterlife and will enter Jannah because they fall under the category of the 'unreached'.
Are non-Muslims today from the unreached?
Mufti Zameel-ur-Rahman has dealt with this question in an excellent way. One can listen to his lecture at the following link:

What is required for a person to be from the 'reached'?
All that is required for da‘wah to reach a person is that they have heard via several channels of the name of Muḥammad, that he claimed and really believed himself to be a Prophet and is said to have produced miracles. Once this message has reached them, they are duty-bound to investigate. If they ignore the impulse to investigate, or due to worldly attachments no impulse to investigate even arises in them, and therefore do not believe based on ignorance, they are kāfir. A large portion of today’s westerners fall into this category.
Just a basic message has to reach them: Muḥammad, he claimed and really believed himself to be a prophet; he has miracles - that's it. Most educated Westerners, I believe, have received this message. That is sufficient for them to be mukallaf.
The exception Imām al-Ghazālī refers to, apart from those who never heard the name Muḥammad at all, are those who were raised believing that “Muḥammad” was not a serious figure but someone who falsely claimed prophethood (e.g. for fame or for a personal agenda). Meaning, this was all they were ever told and never heard a basic outline of the truth because of being distant from Muslim societies.
But, if someone hears both the distorted version and also a basic outline of the truth (that Muḥammad was a serious figure who sincerely claimed prophethood and was said to have performed miracles), then they are mukallaf to investigate. - Mufti Zameel-ur-Rahman
What is the status of the comments of Habib Ali al-Jifri?
By Allah, this is disbelief. Besides some tribes in the Amazon, Sentinel Island or in the outback, Islam has entered every home, and EVEN with the most lenient view, assuming they were lied to in such a manner that disqualifies inquiry about Islam, the reality of events around the world should force them to inquire about the veracity of our claim.
To say that a majority of disbelievers nowadays will not enter the fire is insanity of the highest order, irja' to comparable levels to the murji'a of old!
And I do not want to hear about a ta'wil of his statement - enough - [@ZouhairsMurid]
What should people be told about this problematic statement of Habib Ali al-Jifri in particular?
He tells people: "The question of who enters heaven and hell is not my business, and this is a dispute with Allah regarding His Lordship."
Then he says: “The majority of the six and a half billion non-Muslims will not enter Hell!” How astonishing! If this isn't your concern, then by what right have you reserved seats of salvation for most of the world's population before the scales are even set up?
Is this a mercy that precedes the mercy of the Creator, or is it a dilution of religion and a transgression against its rulings to appease the masters of the satanic Abrahamic faith and Emirati funding?!
He offers an excuse worse than the sin itself, claiming that the inhabitants of the skyscrapers in New York are excused because the media has distorted Islam for them! Glory be to Allah!
A person who can reach the ends of the earth and search for the most minute details of markets, goods, and technologies with the click of a button, yet is too lazy to search for the purpose of his existence and the final message—is this person incapable or simply turning away? The Qur'an answers without mincing words: “And those who disbelieve turn away from that which they are warned of.”
So, whoever closes his eyes to the sun cannot excuse himself with darkness. Even if it is “media distortion”…
If an excuse could save one from punishment, then the common people of Quraysh would be the first to enter Paradise! Did not the leaders of Makkah launch the fiercest campaign of misinformation in history against Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam), telling people that he was a sorcerer and a madman?
Did Allah excuse those who believed the propaganda of Quraysh and turned away without seeking the truth for themselves? Rather, He decreed a decisive warning upon them: {And those who disbelieved said, "Do not listen to this Qur'an and speak noisily during its recitation that perhaps you will overcome." So We will surely make those who disbelieved taste a severe punishment.}
As for his attempt to terrify listeners by claiming that affirming Hell for the disbelievers is "a challenge to Allah's Lordship," this is a malicious deception that conflates the absolute with the relative. We do not judge a specific person who dies before us as being in Hell, for that is unseen. But we do decide the general ruling revealed by Allah, whose decisive word we reiterate: “Indeed, those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein.”
Has believing in the Qur'an become, in the view of these defeated souls, a challenge to Allah’s Lordship? This discourse is like a guard placed at the edge of a precipice to warn people, yet he distributes blindfolds and says, “Your fall is not my concern; the place is safe!”
It is the false mercy that trivialises disbelief in people’s hearts that drives them to Hell. If the disbelievers were saved by their ignorance and the distortion of their media, then leaving them in their disbelief would have been more merciful, and the blood of the Companions would not have been shed to spread the religion.
Beware of these narcotics sold in the marketplace of religious diplomacy to dilute beliefs. [@Shuounislamiya]
