The Most Merciful of My Ummah upon My Ummah

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radiyallahu 'anhu reports that Rasulullah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, "The most merciful of my Ummah upon my Ummah is Abu Bakr..." [Tirmidhi]

Rasulullah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said that the system after himself will be that of Khilafat, and he indicated in multiple ways that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu will be his first Khalifah. Moreover, he clearly said in the narration quoted above that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu is the most merciful of the Ummah upon the Ummah.

Now, who shows mercy? The elder upon the junior, or, the junior to the senior? Does the shepherd show mercy to the herd, or, does the herd show mercy to the shepherd? Does the father show mercy to the child, or, does the child show mercy to the father?

It is quite clear that the senior shows mercy to the junior. The father shows mercy to the children. The shepherd shows mercy to the herd. The superior shows mercy to the inferior. This trait is the quality of a believer.

Hence, when we read, hear, and study this particular hadith, then there remains no room for anyone to deny that Rasulullah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam is informing us of the great and lofty rank and status of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu. When the affairs of the Ummah will be in the hands of this person, i.e., Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu, then he will show mercy upon them, and he is the most merciful of the Ummah that will show mercy to them. Hence, this hadith also informs us of the Khilafat of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu.

If there was any individual out of the flock and herd of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu, then Rasulullah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam would not have declared Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu as the most merciful of the Ummah upon the Ummah. Therefore, this hadith shows the Khilafat of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radhiyallahu 'anhu and that he was the first Khalifah also.
