Al-Albani is not an Authority in Authenticating & Weakening Hadith - Mufti Muhammad Taqi 'Uthmani

Shaykh Nasir-ud-Deen Albani saheb [May Allah guide us all] is not an authority in authenticating [tashih] and weakening Ahadith [tad'if]. Subsequently, he has stated that some Ahadith of Bukhari and Muslim are da'if [weak].

It is astonishing to note that he rigidly graded a certain hadith, and said that it is da'if [weak], not worthy of consideration, defective etc. and five years later the same hadith was discussed. He was told to speak on it and he said, "This is an authentic [sahih] and accurate hadith," i.e., the hadith that he stringently denounced, he goes ahead and forgets about what he already said. These contradictions are not one or two, there are tens of them, whilst it is said that he is the Mujaddid [reviver] of this century in authenticating and weakening hadith!

Anyway, he is a scholar, and one should not use a heavy word for a scholar. However, as a result of his disrespect towards the pious predecessors in his tone and mode of speech and his partiality in research, he has classified authentic Ahadith as da'if [weak], and wherever his ideas and agendas were in front, he classified even da'if [weak] as authentic [sahih]. Hence, he is not worthy of consideration.

The work of authenticating [tashih] and weakening [tad'if] Ahadith is not easy. The 'Ulama' have said that after the 4th Hijri century, no-one has the rank and status to overlook the authentication and weakening done by the pious predecessors by saying, 'according to me, this is sahih and this is da'if.'

Even a great scholar like Hafiz ibn Hajar rahimahullah would not say, 'this hadith is sahih or da'if.' On the other hand, he would say, "its narrators are those of the sahih," or, "its narrators are reliable." He would use these words, he would not make the tashih or tad'if from his own side. He would explain, "I am not of the position to authenticate."

Today, some people say, 'according to me, this is da'if'. The response to them is, "They say, 'this is not permissible according to us, but who are you, that you should have an 'according to'?"
